THE EAVES MEETS WISWOS

In celebration of International Women’s Day, The Eaves has teamed up with WISWOS: Women in Sound Women on Sound (WISWOS) links individuals, groups and organizations to each other, promotes knowledge exchange that shapes our current understanding of sound and technology, and aims to interrupt the gender gap by highlighting women who are working, writing, and creating in the field of sound.

In this month's post to The Eaves, two of the founders of WISWOS explore some of the mechanisms underlying the lack of visibility for women writing on sound and discuss two of the projects WISWOS has initiated to counteract this invisibility.

ARCHITECTURE WITHOUT WALLS

Architecture Without Walls, a book project I have been involved in, has been published by Brandon LaBelle's Errant Bodies Press.

The texts included in this book present five architectural designs realized by Vera Buhß, Giacomo Gianetta, Konstantin Schimanowski, Katharina Schmidt, and Sum-Sum Shen. Instead of being generated and displayed in graphic media and approaching the object of design visually, these architectural environments have been conceived through auditory and literary practices. The designs presented in this book provide accessibility to new architectural entities not by showing their constructive conditions of emergence, but instead by describing the emergent qualities that configure them as environments. The book has been edited by Alex Arteaga and Boris Hassenstein.

The book has been presented at various events in Barcelona, Vienna, and Berlin.

THE EAVES

The Eaves is an online journal that features writing about sound, sound about writing, and everything in between. Aspiring to challenge the assumption that language is tuned to the visual more than to the auditory, it showcases essays, short fiction, and poetry that are all ears as well as sound pieces that deal with sound‘s relation to speech, writing, or both.
